INTASC Standards
What is INTASC?
The acronym INTASC stands for the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium. This organization has worked with states and districts in developing a set of standards by which new teachers should be measured. Most states have adopted these standards in training, assessing, and monitoring new teachers in their first few years of teaching. Part of their methodology has been to introduce the use of portfolios into the assessment process of new teachers:
From 1994-2000, INTASC oversaw the Performance Assessment Development Project (PADP), a multi-state (15 states) effort to develop reliable, valid, and fair performance-based assessments for licensing beginning teachers and state-wide support systems for beginning teachers who are required to participate in this assessment. The immediate goal of the project was to produce prototype assessments in the form of portfolios that could be used to evaluate a new teacher’s performance against today’s more rigorous professional standards.
They suggest that new teachers form their portfolios around the 10 standards, gathering evidence from the classroom of proficiency in each standard. In this section of my portfolio, I have gathered artifacts from my teaching career that demonstrate my knowledge and application of the standards in my classroom. Each artifact is accompanied by an explanation and justification that detail why the artifact has been included. I will update this section occassionally as I grow as a teacher.
The 10 standards are
- Content Pedagogy
- Student Development
- Diverse Learners
- Multiple Instructional Strategies
- Motivation and Management
- Communication and Technology
- Planning
- Assessment
- Reflective Practice: Professional Growth
- School and Community Involvement
