I suck at golf!

On the last Saturday in June every year I play in a four-man scramble golf tournament with my wife’s uncle and his two sons.  In a scramble format, each golfer on a team hits the ball, the four golfers then decide which of the four shots is the best, and then they play four more shots from that spot.  In this way, low scores are the norm.  In fact, the first time that we played in this tournament (3 years ago), we recorded a score of 16 under par for 18 holes and took first place.  I love playing scrambles especially with family.  It helps that my three teammates are all excellent golfers.

In the other tournaments that I’ve played as a member of this team, I’ve felt that I contributed to our success on the course.  I’ve felt that I’ve played well enough to be an asset.  Well, that changed today.  We played in the tournament today (held at Millsite Golf Course, Utah’s best kept golfing secret), and I played horribly.  Except for one nice putt and a good chip shot, I didn’t contribute to the team at all.  Even without my help, my team managed to take 2nd place with a 13-under-par 59; however, if I had even played remotely decent, I think we could have won it.  I’m happy for my team, and I’m proud of their success.  I just can’t believe that I stunk so badly.

I’ve golfed three times this week, and my game has gone to hell.  Last week, I was my regular 12-handicap self.  This week, I’m terrible.  I don’t know what happened, but I don’t feel comfortable standing over a golf ball anymore.  I think that it’s time to take a week off, do something besides golf, and refocus.  Hopefully, my new-found suckiness is just a glitch and not a new standard.  Yuck!
